Tim Kliphuis Trio 2019

Imagine being married off to a Scottish king when you are 14 years old. Sailing across the sea from Denmark to be the wife of someone you hardly know. Your father gives away Shetland and the Orkney Islands as your wedding present.

‘The Stirling Queen’ is a brand new piece in five movements with Scottish and Nordic roots, with influences of gypsy, baroque and minimal music. It tells the story of Queen Margaret’s youth, her marriage to James III and her early death at Stirling Castle.

The Tim Kliphuis Trio, firm favourites on the Scottish scene, have invited Perthshire fiddle ace, Patsy Reid and Ireland’s Young Musician of the Year, Clare Friel. This one-off programme shows how music is a universal language, crossing the boundaries between styles and countries.

About the Trio

The Tim Kliphuis Trio with Nigel Clark (guitar) and Roy Percy (bass) has built up a following in Scotland and abroad with a genre-defying mix of gypsy, folk and classical. The Trio regularly has worked with Frankie Gavin, the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra and Cape Town Philharmonic, and just released its new album ‘Concertos’ on the Sony Classical label.

Commissioned by The Queen’s Hall Tim Kliphuis has written this work for the ensemble and students at The City Edinburgh Music School at Broughton High School*.
