For her new album ‘Natural Conclusion’ Rose stepped boldly forward, a fully mature writer/artist in her next great stride. She enlisted Grammy award winning producer Joe Henry and together they gathered trusted colleagues to record in Toronto. The result is what Cousins calls “the most honest and vulnerable thing” she has made to date.
Cousins has become known for artistic collaborations with filmmakers, photographers, painters, and other diverse artists. In particular, she is known for making beautiful videos. Her video for “Chains” made with Nova Scotia filmmaker Nathan Boone premiered on Billboard. Her video for “White Flag” was a collaboration with Halifax filmmaker Shehab Ilyas and premiered on NPR. And her video for “Grace” was made with PEI filmmaker Jennah MacMillan and was shot in a church at home in Charlottetown, featuring notable and loved locals. Her merchandise features paintings created by Toronto artist Jamie Ashforth, inspired by the album.
‘Natural Conclusion’ was nominated for a 2018 Grammy award (Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical – Ryan Freeland, Joao Carvalho), has won two Music Nova Scotia Awards (Americana Album of The Year and Solo Album of the Year), is on Polaris Music Prize’s “Longer List,” and Cousins was named “Best Artist to Enjoy Quietly” by Halifax’s weekly arts paper The Coast.
In addition to touring, Cousins continues to travel to Nashville, Los Angeles, and Toronto to write. She is working to expand her catalogue of songs to draw her next project from, as well as for placement in film and TV and performance by other artists.
(The Guardian)“The simplicity of these songs is deceiving; as sparse as they feel, her voice draws you in until you realize you are at the heart of the storm.”
