Multi-award-winning Japanese violinist Midori returns to the International Festival with her long-time recital partner, American pianist Özgür Aydin. In a dazzling programme of youthful and innovative violin sonatas, Mozart, Gabriel Fauré and Richard Strauss all feature.

Mozart wrote Violin Sonata No 23 K306, with its glittering extended cadenza in the final movement, at the age of 22. A century later, Fauré's first Violin Sonata, filled with the romantic sounds of his highly original harmonic language, marked the overdue beginnings of his own public success. Hot on his heels, Strauss, aged just 23, filled his first Violin Sonata with technical brilliance and a kind of passion that could be said to reflect his romantic life.

Journeying the 19th century, these diverse sonatas show the brilliance of composers on the cusp of maturity, each set on rewriting the rules of the form.
