WHAT'S ON / Scottish Ensemble: Prophecy with Christine Rice

Christine Rice: mezzo-soprano; Matthew Truscott: guest director

Stravinsky: Apollon Musagète
Haydn: Arianna a Naxos
Purcell: Fantasia No. 7
Purcell: Extracts from ‘Timon of Athens’ and ‘Dido & Aeneas’ (including Dido’s Lament)
Berlioz: Arrangements of scenes featuring Cassandra and Dido from ‘Les Troyens’

Framed by Stravinsky’s ballet, a tribute to the god of Music and Prophecy, the tragic destinies of Dido, Cassandra and more are brought to life in this dramatic selection of music inspired by Greek mythology, spanning moods as well as centuries as we sweep from heaven-sent arias to heart-breaking laments.

Christine Rice is one of today’s leading mezzo-sopranos, praised for her versatile, powerful, beautiful voice. A former BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist, her career soared after being recognised by Royal Opera House director Antonio Pappano, and she is now in demand at prestigious venues and festivals across the world.

“the seemingly endless depth and richness of [Rice’s] voice with its flawless upper register... a performance which is unlikely to be surpassed in the operatic world this year”
(The Arts Desk, Wigmore Hall, 2017)
