WHAT'S ON / Scottish Chamber Orchestra: Schumann Piano Concerto

We are very sorry that both conductor Robin Ticciati and soloist Igor Levit have had to withdraw from this week's concert with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra due to ill health.

The concert programme remains as advertised, and will instead be directed from the violin by the SCO’s fantastic leader Benjamin Marquise Gilmore.  Everyone is extremely grateful to Ben, and to Javier Perianes* who has stepped in at very short notice to play/direct the Schumann Piano Concerto.

JS Bach: Brandenburg Concerto No 1
Schumann: Piano Concerto
Haydn: Symphony No 101 ‘The Clock’

Schumann wrote several pieces for piano and orchestra, but the work heard tonight is his only fully-fledged piano concerto. Composed for Schumann’s wife, Clara, the concerto features Igor Levit, winner of Gramophone Magazine’s Recording of the Year 2016.

Bach’s First Brandenburg Concerto provides a festive upbeat. Of the six Brandenburg Concertos, this has the most colourful instrumentarium; it also contains an unusually varied selection of movements, including a courtly minuet and a Polish peasant dance. Haydn’s Symphony No 101 completes the programme; its highly inventive use of music conceived for a mechanical clock has helped make it one of his most popular works.

*Born in Andalusia, Javier Perianes has been described as “a pianist of impeccable and refined taste, blessed with a warmth of touch” (The Telegraph). This summer he made his BBC Proms début, performing Saint-Saëns Piano Concerto No 2 with the BBC Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Sakari Oramo.  Two weeks ago he opened the Los Angeles Philharmonic 2017/18 season, performing Mozart Piano Concerto No 27 with Gustavo Dudamel.

His most recent performance of the Schumann Piano Concerto was in September with the Orquesta Nacional de España and David Afkham. Javier Perianes’ recording of Bartók’s third piano concerto with Pablo Heras-Casado and the Munich Philharmonic will be released in Spring 2018.
